The Cypress House

Overview

The site is narrow and overlooked on two sides, so the house turns inward. A row of mature cypress hides the approach, and the rooms wrap a central court that stays in shade until late afternoon.

What the house gives up in sea frontage it takes back in privacy. For eight months of the year the court is the real living room, and the interior rooms run in a loop around it.

A narrow slot on the west side frames one deliberate view of the water. You see it only from the dining table.

More about Old Town

Inside the house

The courtyard
Open to the sky, shaded until late afternoon by the house itself, with a shallow water basin along one edge. For most of the year this is where the household lives.
The loop of rooms
Living, kitchen and dining run in a continuous ring around the court, so you are never more than a few steps from shade or sun.
The west slot
One narrow opening on the sea side frames a single deliberate view of the water, held for the dining table.
