Villa Aurelia

Overview

Villa Aurelia does the opposite of its neighbors on the hill. Instead of one mass cut into the slope, it is three smaller buildings that step down with the existing terraces, linked by a glass walkway that doubles as a gallery.

No part of the house shows more than two floors from any angle, and each outdoor room catches the sun at a different hour. The top building holds the main suite and a private roof terrace.

Inside, the walls are lime plaster left pale, and the floors are the same stone as the retaining walls, so inside and outside read as one surface.

More about The Terraces

Inside the house

The three volumes
Each building is a single room wide. The lowest holds the kitchen and a summer room, the middle holds living and dining, the top holds the main suite.
The gallery spine
A glazed walkway links all three, lit from a clerestory above. It carries the art collection and does the work corridors would otherwise do.
The roof terrace
Above the top volume, a planted terrace with an outdoor kitchen and the longest view on the plot.
